Dawn was just breaking the morning of May 27 when a guy was caught on surveillance video tossing a rock at the window of a home in the Springhaven Pointe subdivision near Southfield Road and 12 Mile in Southfield.  Confirming nobody was home, he and his buddies went inside -- three of them altogether.

"Once they figured out somebody was not home, then they threw a brick through the back window, went through the window and, I guess, got off with a lot of the homeowner's items," said Irin Montgomery, president of the subdivision's association.

He had seen mail scattered in the street that morning.

"It was about four or five different homes' mail.  It wasn't just one person's home, and so, as I sorted the mail and as I was going to drop them off, I noticed the mail slots were left open, and our mail carrier never does that."

Turns out the guys had searched neighborhood mailboxes to see if mail was piling up, meaning the homeowners were gone for that Memorial Day holiday weekend.

However, the homeowners might have the last laugh because as these guys were stealing televisions, unbeknownst to them, they were doing so right in front of multiple cameras.  (Watch Amy Lange's video report to see some of the surveillance video)

"I think somebody's going to actually know them, and so the association is actually putting up a reward of $500 for any information to get these guys arrested and off the street."

This is really a good reminder for everyone that your mailbox could serve as a clue to thieves that you're not home, so as we head into the holiday, if you're not going to be around, make sure you have a neighbor collect your mail.

Meanwhile, for potential burglars out there, take note, this subdivision is armed with video surveillance.

"Almost close to half of the homes in the neighborhood actually have video cameras," Montgomery said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Southfield Police.
