Inside the interview: what one Walmart employer wants to hear

Posted: Updated:

Chris Coffman knows a thing or two when it comes to interviews. He started as an interviewee when he was in high school and now, 25 years later, he's the final decision maker in the hiring process.

As the store manager of the Taylor Walmart, Coffman has seen plenty of interviews over the past 7 years and recommends interviewees to:

  • Become educated on the company and become familiar with the store. If you shop there, let the employer know.
  • Explain you want a career with the company, not just a job. Show your skills and prove you want to succeed at the position.
  • If you know someone who works for the company let the hiring manager know. Good references could give you a leg up.
  • Be excited about the interview and your opportunity with the company.
  • Don't say you sent out a bunch of applications, that you were driving by and decided to apply or that you took the interview because they were the first company to call back.

After you land the job Coffman also has tips on how to make the most out of it.

  • Ask questions! Information and understanding the job are key.
  • Understand that you are there for the customer. Work to exceed their expectations.
  • Focus on completing your tasks on time.
  • Don't forget to have fun. When you enjoy your job it won't seem like work.
