It was supposed to be a night of fun, four teenagers headed to the Sterling State Park for the annual fireworks display. Sadly, one of them didn't make it home.
Amanda James, a Riverview High School student, was just 15 years old when her life ended on a stretch of Interstate 75.
"It was horrific, a little girl laying there on the cement. It was just something you don't want to see," said Berlin Township Fire Chief Paul Barron.
He was on duty Tuesday night when the call came in. It was around 11:15, not long after the fireworks show came to an end.
A father himself, the scene he encountered in the northbound lane of I-75 near Newport Road still haunts him.
"The little girl was ejected and another car ran her over. It was terrible. She was pretty much dead instantly," Barron said.
Remnants of the deadly crash still litter the highway -- broken car parts, a school book and the dented guardrail.
James was with three other teens at the time, two 17-year-olds and the driver, who is 19.
"He was weaving in and out of the trucks and he just lost control. Nobody hit him. You know, he just lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the guardrail and the car looked like it went through a shredder," said Barron.
No one was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and we've also learned the three teenaged passengers should not have been in the car. The driver had a restricted license due to previous driving infractions.
"He got on the phone and called his dad, and he told dad, he said, "I really screwed up." He [said], "I killed my best friend."
The other two passengers were treat for minor injuries. The driver was taken into police custody. Charges are pending.
There will be a vigil for James Thursday night at 9:00 p.m. at Riverview High School.
