There was panic at the pool Friday. A toddler drowned. Three adults were watching one child. This is a horrible reminder that it only takes a moment for tragedy to strike.
Jomon Davis was the only child in the pool with three adults -- his mother, his grandmother and his mother's sister.
Aunt Shalonda Kinchen said that after swimming, the three women took Jomon out of the pool and all four went into the house. They told police that ten minutes after going back into the house, panic set in. They discovered Jomon was missing.
"He went and got back into the pool on his own. He climbed up the ladder and got into the pool, and my [sister] told me to go look for him. I couldn't actually find him, so ... my mama and my sister [and I] went looking for him. They went in the backyard. I was up here. They [saw] him face first in the pool," said Kinchen.
Jomon was not breathing. One of the women called 911.
"My mama started giving him CPR. Then my sister started giving him CPR. After that, they brought him in here and laid him on the floor."
Detroit Fire EMS arrived and attempted resuscitation, but the boy could not be revived. A day of fun swimming in the sun to beat the heat turned deadly.
Jomon had just turned two on Monday.
A large open bottle of Gray Goose vodka stood alongside children's toys on the porch of the home on Evergreen at Orangelawn in northwest Detroit. Police also noticed the vodka bottle.
"I talked with several members of the family when we arrived on scene here and I don't believe there was any alcohol related to this situation with this child," said Detroit Police Sergeant Michael Marshall.
Neighbors who know the family and the boy are stunned.
"I am a parent and I send my condolences out to the family and pray," said Darrell Shipp.
Drowning is silent and happens very quickly. Whether it's a pool, pond or bathtub, it does not take long and can happen in an inch of water.
Homicide is investigating. That's procedure in the death of a child. Right now, it is being ruled as an accidental drowning.
The Wayne County prosecutor will review the case to determine if any charges will be filed.
