DETROIT (WJBK) -

The bodies of a man and a woman whose heads, hands and legs were cut off have been found floating in the Detroit River and a nearby tributary.

A group of men fishing along the banks of the river, just east of Belle Isle, made the gruesome discovery Tuesday morning around 6:30 a.m. They tell FOX 2's Al Allen they found the human torso floating in the water and notified the U.S. Coast Guard.

Detroit police say Coast Guard officials on the way to the scene discovered the second body floating around 7:15 a.m.

When FOX 2's Al Allen arrived, fishermen led cameras to the discovery of two legs, one arm, a circular saw, a suitcase and bed sheets along the banks of the river.

"Someone obviously had a bone to pick with these two people and wanted to send a message," said Detroit Police Commander Steven Dolunt.

Police say the didn't know how long the bodies of the man and woman had been in the water.

The identities of the victims have not been determined.

Detroit police are handling the investigation.
