Lt. Governor Brian Calley is a man on the move

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -
Lt.Gov Brian Calley is doing something that previous l.g.'s have not often done: He is earning his pay check.

This is not to cast aspersions on those who preceded him, but it does underscore that he is working harder than probably most of his predecessors combined.

It's not that the John Cherry's, Jim Brickley's, Martha Griffith's, and Dick Posthumus's of the world were lazy.  On the contrary.  The real problem was, their bosses never utilized them to the extent that this governor treats his man Friday.

Calley is everywhere.

The governor wanted a pension tax on seniors, there was Mr.Calley in the midst of the give and take.  The governor needed a bridge built, there was Mr.Calley trying, albeit unsuccessfully, to get it done.

You name the issue and somewhere the finger prints of the young Mr.Calley can be found.

And that's just the way Gov.Rick Snyder envisioned the thing when he picked the former state lawmaker for the second spot on the ticket.  Being from Ann Arbor and all Mr.Snyder knew he needed a go-to-guy who could hit the legislative hallways running from day one.  And Mr.Calley has been running every since.  On top of that this governor is not bashful about sharing the stage which gives his second-in-command even more exposure and cache. Not all governors are that generous.

Mr. C.  has learned to use this position as he's generally credited with bringing the governor to the table on the long-delayed effort to create insurance options for families with Autistic children.  The bill had languished for years, but motivated by his own familial challenges with the disease, Mr.Calley succeeded where others failed.  By the way his child will not benefit in anyway from the program.

Of course, all this is part of the political grooming process as no kid wants to grow up to be lt.governor, as former Lt.Gov Jim Brickley once deadpanned.  Mr. Calley must have some interest in being the top banana once the current top banana leaves office.

The only question is will he get his chance in two years or six?
