Most boys at this age are mesmerized by cars. Perhaps it's the fascination of impending adventure, day dreams of driving to a fantasy destination on your very own road trip. For many kids, this dream carries over to adulthood, being able to take control of that dream car and living out your childhood dreams. For David (2001), he's no exception. Along with being active outdoors, David spends a fair amount of time dreaming of driving across the border to visit his roots in Mexico.
We went to the famed Petersen Automotive Museum. His favorite car? The Bat Mobile of course. It's commensurate to what he wants to be when he grows up. David wants to fight crime. He doesn't want to don on a bat suit but he does want to wear a police uniform. David tells us that he wants to help protect people and keep everyone safe. Maybe he'll trade in the Bat Mobile for the vintage Highway Patrol Vehicle. There's innocence about David, he tells us that in order to catch "bad guys" the police car must be able to go 60MPH.
The reality is that kids grow up quickly and get thrusted into a fast paced world and all children need a permanent family – a stable support to ease them up to speed on life's highways. But for as long as we can, let's make sure he has that permanent family to keep things under "60" for just a little while longer.
In spite off his difficult past, David is a remarkably bright little boy. Earlier on he didn't get to go to school consistently and was lagging behind in English language skills but on this day, true to what his social worker assessed he has the capacity to catch up and it seems that he already is. We found him to be thoughtful and articulate. In regard to an adoptive family? David gives us a "green light" and "big thumbs up" to find him the perfect family to help him learn the rules of the road and negotiate through all of the traffic jams life invariably throws our way.
For now he plays with his "Hot Wheels" car collection and continues day dreaming of touring on the open road. When he's old enough to do so, we hope he won't be driving alone. Look at that smile. We were only too happy to add to David's Hot Wheel collection but we hope that someone on the horizon, there will be a family to flag us down to accept David into their "fleet" of immediate and extended family.
