Back to school clothing doesn't have to be expensive

ATLANTA -

Back to school shopping isn't limited to school supplies like pencils, paper and rulers. It also means buying new clothes, and the clothes don't have to be expensive!

Jordan Skoda is your typical 17 year old. She's excited to go back to school and determined to look her best.

"I kind of have my own style. I don't really go by other people's style," said Skoda.

While she has her own style, her mom is the one who foots the bill. Around back to school time, it's a big bill.

"It'll be a couple hundred dollars just for the basics. It has to be new shoes, it has to be a new purse, it has to be a new book bag. Then the clothes on top of that," said Jordan's mother, Teri Skoda.

Back to school clothes don't have to cost a fortune. Stylist Daniel Troppy recommends people hit estate sales, or weekend yard sales. Thrift stores are also a great source for low-priced clothing.

"You can hit the thrift stores and consignment stores. Thrift stores are great in general, not only from the clothing perspective, but [also] the handbags, the belts. You can get really great new or used belts, handbags, anything. You can get items that are vintage, and you can also get items that are brand new, still with the tags on them," said Troppy.

Troppy took Jordan to Value Village on Moreland Avenue in East Atlanta to find her style. Beforehand, Good Day Atlanta's Karen Graham and Jordan went to a high end department store and a mid-level department store to look for some back to school outfits. They took photos of those outfits and challenged Daniel to find similar looks at Value Village.

Troppy found a huge rack of clothes for Jordan to try on, and she fell in love with a trendy outfit of skinny jeans and plaid top, all for just $7.00. It was similar to the department store looks that cost $60.00 and $87.00. The dress she loved was just $4.50, compared to the pricier dresses and the department stores that cost $36.00 and $42.00.

If you plan to head to the thrift store for back to school styles, Troppy urges you to take some patience, and plan on spending a lot of time to do some searching.

If the prices aren't already fabulous enough, thrift stores have certain times of the week or month when they offer even bigger discounts. At Value Village, clothing and domestics are 50 percent off on the last Wednesday of every month. At Salvation Army thrift stores, clothing and bedding is 50 percent off every Wednesday. Goodwill designates a certain color each week that they mark down 50 percent.
