Tech Check: Tablet vs. Laptop for back-to-school

ATLANTA -

It used to be that you had to choose between the types of pens and paper. Would it be a ball point pen? Was it college or wide rule paper?

But now, it is a debate between what type of technology you need to get for your student. The question now, should you get a laptop or a tablet?

Laptops do it all and you will never go wrong by choosing a laptop for a student. But there are advantages to tablets, plus children want the latest technology to compete with their classmates.

But what you want, what they need, what they might break not to even mention what you can afford should all figure into your decision.

What you want

  • Parents are divided on the question of laptop vs. tablets. According to a survey by pricegrabber.com, 50 percent of parents said they were buying a laptop for their students, while 49-percent said tablet.

What you need

  • If your student will be expected to run school software or access tricky school websites the answer is laptop.
  • If your child will mostly be web browsing for home work help or eReading, the answer is tablet.
  • If you child is going to be doing a of writing, word processing or anything that involves a lot of keyboard use, the answer is laptop. You can buy a wireless keyboard for tablet, but it's not a great experience.
  • If portability is an issue, what's the easiest to haul around? The answer is tablet.

What they might break

  • For this we asked the docs at Atlanta's iHospital to weigh in. When it comes to kids and technology Doc Mindi says if you're worried your kid will break it, choose a laptop. It's more durable.
    • With laptops coming down in price, you can pick up a good one for around $400 to $500 dollars. That's about the price of a good tablet. So the answer is either.

What you can afford

Most importantly, make sure to check with your school to see what requirements it has before buying either device. Almost all colleges prefer a laptop for class work, but they are also turning to iPads for text books, so the same advice applies which is to do your homework on what they want.
