Fayette County deputies conducted roadblocks on Friday in their investigation of the death of Denice Roberts. She was killed last Friday when she and her grandmother surprised a burglar in her home.
"My heart is broken. Whoever did this, not only took my granddaughter's life, they took my reason for living," said the grandmother, who asked to not be identified.
The grandmother said that she had been Roberts' sole caretaker.
"She had cerebral palsy. I had cared for her since birth. Her little body was crippled, but her mind was sharp," said Roberts.
Authorities conducted the roadblocks on Bohannon Road at around the same hour Roberts was murdered at her home.
According to police, Roberts and her 78-year-old grandmother were returning from errands at around 11 a.m. last Friday when they interrupted a burglary at their home on Bohannon Road in Tyrone. The suspects ran out of the back door and into their car, police said. As the car pulled away, a shot was fired in the direction of the house, hitting Roberts.
The woman died at the home, according to authorities.
"People are creatures of habit. So the routine is that if they've been out at 11 a.m. in the past Friday, good chance they'll be out 11 a.m. today," said Fayette County Investigator Brent Rowan.
Investigators are hoping that someone passing by at the time of the murder may have noticed something suspicious.
"Vehicle descriptions, descriptions of anybody they may have seen suspicious in the area. Possibly slowing down, looking at houses. At this point, we're just trying to take any information we can get to help this family have some type of closure," said Rowan.
Police said the suspects may have fled in a silver sedan, possibly a 4-door.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Fayette County Sheriff's Office.
