Contract talks at Oakland University hit a snag

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) -

The fall semester is just around the corner at Oakland University, but time is running out for professors to work out a new contract.

The 2009 deal expires at 11:59 p.m. tonight but there's been yet another snag at the bargaining table. The state's mediator involved was unavailable to meet Monday, meaning negotiations have been pushed back to Thursday.

Union leads are now butting heads over financial compensation and benefits packages.

Karen Miller
, president of Oakland University's American Association of University Professors, says OU professors are in the 16th percentile of faculty salaries for institutions of its size.

"We have very good fiscal management of the university and this is one thing that has distressed us so much that we believe that it's time for investment in one of the most important assets the university has and that's its faculty," said Miller.

Late Monday, an Oakland University spokesman said it is school policy not to comment on ongoing negotiations.
