WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. (MyFox Detroit) -
A special tribute will be held Tuesday to honor the West Bloomfield police officer killed in the line of duty by a barricaded gunman. Patrick O'Rourke, 39,was killed when bullets were fired through the door of a home on Sunday night. That started a nearly 20-hour standoff with suspected gunman 50-year old Ricky Coley at his home on Forest Edge off Pontiac Trail in West Bloomfield Township.
Coley, a former auto executive had legal, financial and marital problems and according to divorce documents obtained by Fox 2 was facing eviction from his home. During the standoff Coley repeatedly fired a weapon. "It was just non-stop gun firing, and we've never seen anything like it" police chief Michael Patton said describing it as hundreds of rounds of gunfire all day long.
At one point, construction equipment was brought in to tear into part of the house, then a robot with a camera surveyed the scene. That's when police discovered the wanted man shot to death inside his home.
Update: 12:15p.m. 9/11/2012
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard tells Fox 2 News, an autopsy shows Coley died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the mouth.
