Outpouring of support for sick Detroit mom fighting to save her home

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (myFOXDetroit.com) -

Kelly Parker's house is on the auction block, so she has made it an eyesore in the hopes of making it very unattractive to potential buyers. Since we first brought you her story, there has been an outpouring of support for the sick mom.

Parker is facing cancer with a sense of humor, choosing to shave her head instead of losing her hair to the disease.

"It was going to fall out anyway. I just beat it to the punch," she explained.

We first told you about the mother of two and her fight to save her tidy home on Detroit's west side on September 11.

Her home went into foreclosure, then up for auction when she could no longer afford it.

When she learned she had cancer, she got desperate. Wanting to save her home for her kids, she took a can of spray paint to it and went public with her problems.

The response has been overwhelming. Recent fundraisers raised over $1,700.

"It's used to keep my home and security for my kids," Parker said.

We asked Lisa Parker whether she thinks her sister will be able to keep her house?

"She's a fighter," she replied. "I do."

Kelly Parker, with the help of her sister, has been turning to Facebook for strength. Prayers have been coming in from across the country.

"There (are) going to be times when she feels like... I don't know if I can do this today, but those little words and those little prayers and everything that's coming in, it gives her more motivation and encourages her a little bit more," Lisa Parker said.

Providence confirmed for Fox 2 that Kelly Parker is an oncology patient at the hospital.

Senator Hansen Clarke's office has also reached out to help try to find a way for her to keep her home, a home that may look like an eyesore on the outside, but it's an eyesore neighbors are willing to put up with.

"I wish I could help," said neighbor Elbertha Deshields. "If I could help her, I would do all I (could) for her."

"The whole block is coming together trying to help her," she added.

Parker has started her radiation treatment. She has a long road ahead of her, but said the prayers from strangers are helping her deal with these difficult days.
