FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) -

The Holocaust Memorial Center is moving historic World War II railway boxcar by crane inside to its permanent location, the Alvin & Henrietta Weisberg Gallery, Monday, Sept. 24.

The Nazis used boxcars to transport millions of European Jews to concentration camps and their deaths during the Holocaust.

This boxcar is believed to be one of the last in existence and the only one exported to the United States from Germany. The Holocaust Memorial Center acquired the boxcar last September.

Local philanthropists Henrietta and Alvin Weisberg's generous donation are funding the construction of the permanent exhibit, which is tentatively scheduled to open in mid- to late-November.

The gift also will be used toward a permanent educational endowment.

The DeRoy Testamentary Foundation and the Oliver Dewey Marcks Foundation are providing additional support for the exhibit.
