Fall weather came with authority this weekend

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Autumn weather came with authority on Saturday behind a strong cold front. The cool weather persisted through the weekend, with the coolest temperatures observed this morning, accompanied by a frost in many places. Earlier today, Rockford dropped to 31° and Chicago O'Hare to 37°.

The first freeze of the season (32 or lower) occurs, on average, on October 15th for Chicago. The earliest freeze on record occurred on September 22nd, 1995 when the mercury dipped to 32. The latest freeze on record occurred on November 24th, 1931 where the temperature dropped to 30.

The first hard freeze (killing frost, 28 degrees or lower) occurs on October 27th. The earliest hard freeze to occur was October 2, 1974 where the mercury dipped to 28. The latest hard freeze occurred on December 3rd, 1899 where the low temp dropped to 27.

This was the first September freeze in Rockford since September 29, 2003.

This was the earliest freeze in Rockford in 17 years, since September 22, 1995.

The low of 37° at Chicago was the earliest 37° or lower since September 22, 1995.
