ATLANTA -
The Atlanta Braves released their roster for the wild card game against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. The list includes nine pitchers, including three starters.
Braves right-hander Kris Medlen is expected to start on the mound at Turner Field against Cardinal's right-hander Kyle Loshe. Medlen has won 23 consecutive starts since May 23, 2010 and the franchise hopes to extend that streak. However, Braves Manager Fredi Gonzalez says he wants to have Tim Hudson and Mike Minor available for Friday's game against the Cardinals in case Kris Medlen has unexpected problems in the bullpen.
Noticeably absent off the list of pitchers is right-handed starter Tommy Hanson. Hanson was picked as the Opening Day starter this season, but seems to not be part of the Braves planned four starter rotation with Kris Medlen, Tim Hudson, Mike Minor and Paul Maholm filling those slots.
Right-hander Cristhian Martinez, who appeared in 54 games and often was effective in long relief, did not make the roster. Joining closer Craig Kimbrel in the bullpen are left-handers Luis Avilan and Eric O'Flaherty and right-handers Chad Durbin and Cory Gearrin.
The Braves clubhouse said earlier that catcher Brian McCann will sit out Friday's game due to injury. He has been recovering from a sore knee and shoulder. David Ross is expected to start with J.C. Boscan backing him.
The 25-man roster includes 12 players with previous postseason experience including Chipper Jones, who is celebrating his career finale.
The roster also includes eight infielders and five outfielders.
The "one and done" game determines who will face the Washington Nationals on Sunday afternoon for the start of the National League Division Series.
