Los Angeles, CA -

(CNS) A man working on a construction project on the San Diego (405) Freeway in West Los Angeles was killed this morning when a concrete beam being lifted off a truck fell on him, police said.

The accident happened around 3 a.m. at 11250 W. Santa Monica Blvd., just east of Sawtelle Boulevard between Beloit Avenue and the southbound side of the San Diego Freeway, according to police and fire officials.

The victim was killed instantly, said Los Angeles police Sgt. John Juarez. The California Highway Patrol was handling the investigation, he said. Cal-OSHA was summoned to the work site to investigate the fatality, which was blamed on a beam of about 3,000 pounds.

City of Los Angeles crisis counselors were dispatched to the site to assist the victim's distraught colleagues, including one who, according to a CHP officer at the scene, had tried to lift the beam off the man.

Officials did not immediately release the name of the victim, who worked for a contractor hired by Caltrans.

The southbound freeway's Santa Monica offramp was expected to remain closed until al least 7 a.m. as an investigation is conducted.
