Weekend Fun: Trick or Treat Festival And Hearse Show

This weekend, the Orange County Marketplace will 15th Annual Trick or Treat Festival and Hearse Show. Mar Yvette was on location Friday morning showcasing everything from coffin go-carts and freak shows.

This year`s event will include a Day of the Dead Celebration. Featured will be Azteca Dancers including Xipe Totec Danzantes Aztecas and Relámpago del Cielo Grupo de Folklorico presenting dances that are part of the traditional Mexican holiday set aside for honoring departed loved ones. Artisans, with their Day of the Dead creations,will include Juan and Maria Cuevas of La Habra, Dany Hernandez of Orange and other artists including Day of the Dead face painting..

A Day of the Dead theme will be part of the annual Hearse Show, an all day display of nearly 50 vintage, restored and classic hearses, funeral coaches and ambulances. Hearse show participants will be creating Day of the Dead altars (Ofrendas) as part of their display and the main stage will feature an altar in honor of Harry Houdini, the famous magician and escape artist who died on Halloween, created by Creepy Garage Studios. In addition free sugar skull painting (with frosting) will be offered for kids from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stilt Calacas and other strolling entertainment will abound.

Kids in costume can get a pre-Halloween fix with daytime trick or treating from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the vast Market Place with merchants and various stops along the way offering an abundance of goodies to keep their sweet tooth satisfied. The first 500 kids also receive a FREE gift from the O.C. Market Place.

As if the presidential race can`t get any scarier!! Doug Goodreau an artist and sculptor from Peculiar Pumpkin Portraits might be able to make it so with his pumpkinheads of Mitt Romney and Barack Obama, which will also be featured in a Mock Election. Vote for your favorite "presidential pumpkin" and you also might win it to take home. Goodreau will also carve out a variety of Day of the Dead theme pumpkins throughout the day.

A Dead Celebrity Costume Contest at 2 p.m. for ages 13 and older offers participants the opportunity to come as their favorite "departed" celebrity/famous person. Prizes awarded for first through third place will include trophies and gift certificates to Mi Casa Mexican Food Restaurant in Costa Mesa.

Also offered is a kid`s costume parade with sweets and music shakers for all and a march through a few aisles with Ukulady who will also sing skeleton and spider songs, Steven Williamson, the Voice of Illusion will do a singing Houdini escape act; and kids can get a free monster mask in Monster Mash Musical Chairs Contest.

Free face painting along with free Swazzle Puppetry`s Interactive Halloween Puppet Shows: "Monster Mash Up" at 10:30 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. is included.The Second Annual I Scream for Ice Cream Contest presented by Farrell`s Ice Cream Parlour Restaurants returns in which the best screams get you a $50 Farrell`s Zoo Party for first place, $30 worth of Farrell`s Ice Cream for second place and $10 worth for third place. All contestants receive a free ice cream cone! Divisions for kids 12 and under, and 13 and older. 15 contestants per division. Sign up in advance at Scream4IceCream@mail.com

FreakShow Deluxe, Winner of the 2010 Hollywood Fringe Festival`s Award for Best Cabaret/Circus, will perform carnival style sideshow performances including fire eating, bed of nails, ladder of machetes, glass eating and Houdini escapes. Circus Sideshow Magician and Comedian Aye Jaye will perform and host the scream and costume contests.
