Word that requests for help in Libya may have been turned down has provoked strong reaction in the metro Atlanta area.
FOX News has learned that three requests for help were apparently denied by the CIA chain of command.
Sources say the operatives were at a CIA annex in Benghazi, about a mile from the U.S. Consulate where Ambassador Chris Stevens and his team were attacked. They requested permission to go to the consulate but were told "to stand down."
The operatives ignored the orders and went to the consulate, evacuating those who remained.
The father of former Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods, who was killed in the attacks, says his son was a hero.
U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson of Georgia said that he's sent two letters to the State Department demanding the Senate Foreign Relations Committee be provided with all the communications and cables from the hours before and after the attack.
"The American people deserve the answers and future ambassadors and existing ambassadors in very dangerous parts of the world need to know the United States is going to protect them when they're doing their job overseas," said Isakson.
For Sen. Isakson and veterans who served, the biggest concern is that U.S. troops and diplomats get the best possible protection.
"Being a vet myself, you want to be treated like you mean something to people back home," said Tracy Marion.
"They sign a contract to defend to and protect our country. The quid pro quo in that contract is that we, as a nation, will stand behind them do everything we can to protect them," said Isakson.
Isakson says he will continue to press for more information about what happened in Benghazi and, if necessary, changes to security procedures to make sure it doesn't happen again.
The CIA released a statement on Friday saying, "No one at any level in the CIA told anybody not to help those in need; claims to the contrary are simply inaccurate."
