WATERFORD, Mich. (MyFox Detroit) -
Waterford Police say a mother/son duo was caught stealing an election sign supporting President Obama. Around 11:30am Sunday, officers responded to the area of Crescent Lake Rd. and Pontiac Lake Rd. after receiving a call from a concerned citizen who reported seeing an election sign being stolen.
A tip caller said a white male in his late teens got out of the passenger side of a black GMC Yukon and removed an election sign supporting President Obama. The caller gave police information which helped locate the suspects and the vehicle they were driving.
The suspect, identified as 17-year-old Kevin Kramer of Waterford, admitted stealing the sign which was recovered from his mother's garage. Kramer was issued a citation for larceny and released. The suspect vehicle was driven by Kramer's mother, who also admitted to stopping so her son could steal the sign.
Police tell us they receive complaints about stolen election signs during every election cycle.
"It's unfortunate that some people don't respect every citizen's right to support their candidates and the ballot proposals and resort to stealing signs in hopes of one less voice being heard," Police Chief Daniel McCaw wrote in a press release. "Stealing or tampering with election signs is a crime and if you get caught in Waterford, you will be prosecuted."
