Everyone loves to get pampered at a spa, but few can afford it. So, when you can't get the star treatment there, here's how to stretch your dollar on skin treatments at home.
At Spa Sentio on Atlanta's west side, it's director Ryan Christopher's job to make sure customers are pampered. He says you can also get some of that spa sensation at home with ingredients like eggs, yogurt, oatmeal, tomatoes, and baking soda.
"The list of everything I've got here would not cost me more than $20," said Christopher.
They're cheap, all natural, and probably in your kitchen. With protein packed egg yolks, you get moisture and egg whites help exfoliate so the whole egg does double duty for your skin.
"All we're going to be doing is painting on a very thin layer. Just so you can see that the skin is moist, that's all you need," Christopher said. "You're going to get the moisture properties and you're going to get the firming properties."
After about 10 to 15 minutes, rinse and wipe off any residue with a washcloth.
Another moisture rich mixture is plain yogurt and oatmeal.
"The lactic acid and the cultures that are in the yogurt are going to help to chemically smooth the skin. The oatmeal itself is very calming. Great for reducing redness, rosacea," explained Christopher.
Christopher says to apply a thin layer. You don't want it dripping off your skin. He says after 10 to 15 minutes, you can rinse the mixture off your skin.
A go-to food to deal with acne and oily skin is tomatoes!
"Tomatoes have high levels of citric acid and malik acid, break downs in our skin," said Christopher. "You just cut up a slice and the juiciest side that you've got cut open, rub it over your skin until you have a nice little residue of the juice and that's all you need. let that sit on for about 10 minutes and then wash it off with water."
You may feel a little tingling with this one, which Christopher says is ok. If there's a lot of tingling, or redness, rinse it off and apply cool water. Your skin might be too sensitive. If your skin can handle it, this procedure can be done three to four times a week.
A mixture of equal parts baking soda and water can be used as a spot treatment on blemishes, or you spread it all over, as a mask. After 10 to 15 minutes, you can rinse it off.
"The skin will feel firm. It will feel tight, and most of all it will feel clean," said Christopher.
One last item is olive oil. It's a great moisturizer for your cuticles.
