BRIGHTON, Mich. (WJBK) -- Kerry Bentivolio is the newly elected Republican congressman for the sprawling 11th District.  The seat formerly occupied by disgraced Congressman Thaddeus McCotter is now his and he's ready to go to Washington.

"I'm just a regular guy who's going to Washington D.C. to represent regular people, and that's what it's all about," he said.

The Tea Party-backed Bentivolio is a former teacher and a reindeer farmer, who stands in for Santa at holiday events.

Bentivolio has certainly taken his lumps during the campaign, but he says much of what you heard or read has been taken out of context and he plans to prove he's a capable congressman.

"Number one is constituency services.  We're going to have a mobile office trailer that travels around the district, and we'll spend like two weeks in Troy, two weeks in Livonia."

In D.C., the former serviceman says the debt crisis, out of control spending and veterans are his first priority.

"Keep an eye on me.  Watch and see how I do.  Give me a report card in two years.  Give me two years and if I don't do the job, boot me out."
