Posted: Updated:

J.R. Martinez was a popular teenager who hoped to play college football .. when that didn't work out,  he joined the army and at age 19, was sent to Iraq.

One month after arriving there, in April 2003, J.R' Humvee hit a mine and exploded. He was burned over 30 percent of his body and spent nearly 3 years in the hospital, averaging one surgery every month.

J.R. became a motivational speaker and then an actor, playing a war vet turned cop on daytime's ‘All My Children.‘ Then last year, he won the top prize on ‘Dancing With The Stars'…here he is on the dance floor with partner Karina Smirnoff.

J.R. will sign copies of his book tomorrow night at 7...at Vroman's bookstore in Pasadena.
