He was one of the valley's most wanted fugitives. Angel Padilla was on the run for more than a month.

Padilla was booked into the 4th Ave Jail Sunday night. Police say he kidnapped his ex-girlfriend and shot at a police officer who tried to stop him.

The officer was not hurt, but his car was riddled with bullets. The woman escaped unharmed.

Monday morning Padilla had his initial court appearance to hear the charges against him. The judge ordered he be held on $1 million bond.

Padilla is also a person of interest in a handful of home invasions -- one of which a man was injured and later died.

He was located Sunday night at a home near 91st Ave and McDowell. His 17-year-old daughter said she is glad he wasn't hurt or killed.

"Obviously because I'm his daughter I didn't want things to happen this way. I didn't want my dad to get caught, but I'm just glad he was caught okay and not injured or killed," said Angelina Padilla. "I don't think he did any of this intentionally, I just know he's not all there."

So how was Padilla finally captured? Officers received a number of tips that he was staying with people he knew.

He said he would shoot out with cops if they ever caught on to him -- so for two days, police watched him and prepared -- and that's when the SWAT team moved in.

They were ready for a gun battle, but in the end, Padilla gave up peacefully.

"Honestly he looked defeated, he looked exhausted, and just kinda wanted to get it over with," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos.

There were three kids inside of the house. At first Padilla, tried to run out the back door, but gave up after seeing dozens of officers in the yard.

"Countless hours were dedicated to get this violent felon off the streets," said Assistant Police Chief Joe Yahner. "We are a much safer community."

Padilla is a dangerous felon who has ties to prison gangs, police say. He's facing an attempted murder charge and more charges are possible.
