Twelve more New York City public schools have reopened, a sign of progress in the recovery from Superstorm Sandy.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott visited one of the schools Monday in Far Rockaway. Public School 43 had been flooded with up to 5 feet of water in its basement and about 2 feet on the first floor. Repairs included new boilers and a generator.
Officials initially thought the damage would take until Nov. 30 to fix.
Eighteen schools remain closed. Bloomberg says many should reopen by the end of the month.
For now, their 7,800 students are going to other schools.
The city has about 1.1 million students in 1,750 public schools.
Since the storm, some schools have held classes in buildings without heat.
