SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- Imad Hamad was tending to his work in Dearborn Monday as head of the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee a long way from his Palestinian homeland, but he is very much involved in what's happening in Gaza and Israel and deeply concerned about the violence there.

"Infants, the children, women, elderly being victims of war for what and why?  It must end and end now," he said.

Talk of a ground offensive, talk of a cease fire -- the only talk Hamad wants to hear is of peace.

"Peace is the answer and in order to get peace, they have to recognize it, believe in it, and be genuine about it."

"Our community knows that this thing could escalate.  That will lead to tremendous losses on both sides and nobody wants that.  Israel wants peace and certainly our community wants peace," said Robert Cohen from the Jewish Community Relations Council.

He is also watching developments in the region very closely and voicing the same wish for the violence to cease, but the two sides differ here, as there, on how to broker that peace.

"Israel does not want this conflict to continue and Israel, even today, has said that they're willing to agree to a truce if the rockets stopped," Cohen said.

"We need to end it and end it now and no end to it without inducing this labor of peace and ending the Israeli occupation," said Hamad.

For now, they will watch and wait and hope for an end to the conflict so far away, but so close to the hearts of so many in Southeastern Michigan.
