New York City is set to establish a temporary ferry service from Staten Island's Sandy-ravaged south shore to Manhattan.

The Department of Transportation has requested bids from New York-area ferry companies to run the service, which would run from a newly built landing at Great Kills Park to Pier 11 at Wall Street and then to 35th Street.

In a statement, Mayor Mike Bloomberg said the ferry would help residents who have been severely impacted by the storm. Many locals' cars were destroyed.

"We are committed to rebuilding and helping people in Staten Island and all impacted areas get their lives back on track," Bloomberg said. "This new fast ferry service from Great Kills is affordable and quick, and we are confident it will help ease the commute for Staten Islanders during these tough times."

DOT hopes to get bids before the end of the week and launch the ferry service by November 26.

The service, which is expected to run for eight weeks, will include six trips leaving Great Kills 6-9 a.m. and six return trips 12-6:15 p.m.

The one-way fare will be $2, the same as the temporary ferry service the Rockaways.
