Giuliani: MTA chair would make great NYC mayor

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - Rudy Giuliani believes Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman Joe Lhota would make a great New York mayor.

His adviser told the Wall Street Journal that Giuliani will do everything he can to help elect Lhota if the chairman decides to enter the race.

Jake Menges, Giuliani's political adviser, said Giuliani would endorse Lhota if he became a candidate.

Lhota, a registered Republican, declined to comment. It's not clear if he is considering entering the race.

Lhota served as Giuliani's budget director, finance commissioner and deputy mayor for operations.

Giuliani served as mayor of New York from 1994 to 2001.

Lhota has been widely praised for his handling of the transit system after Superstorm Sandy.
