Damaged Knights of Columbus Hall ready for Thanksgiving

MYFOXNY.COM -

Inside the Knights of Columbus Hall on Long Beach, Long Island, the tables are set and volunteers are readying hundreds of meals for Thanksgiving.

One peek inside the debris-covered basement shows how much they've had to work to get to this point. Bill Daugherty, a volunteer, says after the storm the entire hall looked the way the basement still does: covered in debris and flooded by sea water.

The electrical panels in the basement still aren't working. Gas and diesel generators outside are keeping the lights on inside.

The hall has been able to serve hot meals for residents and workers who had nowhere else to turn.

Some ladies have been here every step of the way, volunteering their own time even though they don't have heat in their own homes.

One look outside and you can see the challenges ahead for so many people. In the west end of Long Beach, debris is piling up and repairs could be months away.
