Z'Tejas serves up feast for the troops

CHANDLER, Ariz. -

Many of you are probably wrapping up your Thanksgiving Day meal with friends and family. But for some people -- the holiday takes on extra special meaning.

It was heartwarming expression of thanks, in honor of the nation's military veterans and their families. A free turkey dinner was served up this thanksgiving at Z'Tejas Southwestern Grill in Chandler.

Some very grateful service members and veterans were treated to whole lot of turkey, cornbread, and all the trimmings.

The gesture means a lot to Staff Sgt. Joseph Shay, U.S. Army National Guard.

"It gives you a chance to be with family and also see families we know from the base."

Z'Tejas did this at a couple of its restaurants – one in Chandler and another one in Texas.

"We are doing it here and San Antonio right now, feeding 150 troops there and here in Chandler 350," says Jack Reed, Z'Tejas.

For the veterans, this thanksgiving dinner is a welcome taste of home, especially for veterans who spent a lot of time in faraway places.

"All over the Middle East, Iraq, Qatar, a couple times I was all over the place," says veteran Mark Greenwald.

"I think it is a wonderful thing, they have given so much time and energy and have lost a lot, and the families have supported them a lot, so it is a great thing," says Connie Gerken.

John Saliola sliced ham today, thinking of his son, a navy veteran.

"It brings a tear to my eye, it is unbelievable, so many people love doing this every year. It is fantastic, it is fantastic."
