NYC gas rationing to end on Saturday

Posted: Updated:
MYFOXNY.COM -

Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Friday afternoon that the odd-even license plate system for gasoline purchases will be rescinded as of 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning.

Under the rules, any given car can be gassed up every other day.

The city had originally established the odd-even license plate system on Friday, November 9 to reduce wait times at gas stations and then allow the regional fuel supply to recover from damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.

Similar rationing has ended in New Jersey and on Long Island. But on Sunday, Bloomberg extended it until 6:00 a.m. Saturday in the city. He noted then that it was a major travel week, and 30% of New York City's stations were still closed.

Currently, more than 85 percent of NYC gas stations are operational and the available supply of gasoline is expected to increase.
