Authorities are investigating following the death of a man who was shot by DeKalb County police on Friday. It happened around 3:30 p.m. near Wikins Road and Truitt Lane in Decatur.
Police were called to the scene after residents reported seeing a man trying to break into homes in the area. Officers say the suspect-- who was carrying a knife--- jumped into a patrol car, and responding officers tried to use a Taser on him. They say he threatened the officers and tried to steal their cruiser, and they shot him inside the patrol car.
Police say it's not clear why the man got into the squad car, but that officers were forced to shoot the man when he wouldn't put down the knife. The man later died.
One witness told FOX 5 the man confronted one woman in her garage, and she defended herself. A number of residents told FOX 5 the man lived nearby, but police have not identified him or confirmed that information.
Two officers were involved in the shooting. Both of them have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedures in these sort of situations.
