Snowflakes began falling in the tristate region during the Tuesday morning commute.

The New York City area is expected to get a coating of the white stuff, but places north and west could have up to four inches of snow on the ground by the end of the day.

Portions of New Jersey saw rain early on and fog reduced visibility to a quarter mile in some spots.

The storm system made its way up from the Tennessee Valley region. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for some portions of the region.

The storm system will pass to the south during Tuesday. This will bring snow and rain to the area with more of the snow occurring over the colder northern and western suburbs.

New York City could get up to 1 inch; 1 to 2 inches could accumulate in the nearby suburbs, and 2 to 4 inches could fall on the northern and western suburbs.

There will be some snow and rain still in the area for the first part of Tuesday night then some clearing will move in after midnight.
