CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Two gang members were shot after a funeral for a murdered man Monday in the South Side Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood leaving one dead and one critically injured, officials said.

The shooting happened outside St. Columbanus Catholic Church across the street from AA Rayner & Sons Funeral Home in the 300 block of East 71st Street.

"I saw the gentleman with the gun walking the down [church's] stairs firing his weapon," said Charles Childs, a funeral director at the AA Rayner. "It looked like he shot two people as they were trying to flee the scene."

The Rev. Corey Brooks said he spoke at a funeral for James Holman, 32, of Chicago, who was shot to death Nov. 19 in the 6000 block of South Michigan Avenue.

"I preached that we have a great need for God and peace in our neighborhoods," said Brooks, who is running for Jesse Jackson Jr.'s vacant congressional seat.

About 500 people attended the funeral and Brooks heard the gunfire after the service, Brooks said.

"It was crazy," he said. "It was the worst thing you could imagine. People were running, screaming, trying to get safe. When people were going out the door, they saw the bodies."

Brooks said he didn't know the identity of the two people shot.

"This was at a funeral home," he said. "At least on the South Side, no one is safe in Chicago."

"I've seen a lot of things in my life, but this has probably been the toughest and most heart wrenching," Brooks continued.

Outside the church, a sign said: ‘‘Pray for Peace."

A police source said two weapons were recovered in connection with the shootings. One gun was found on one of the victims. Another gun was found nearby at 72nd and Prairie, the source said.

Holman was a member of the Gangster Disciples but police have not confirmed his killing was directly related to a gang conflict, the source said. The motive for Monday's shootings also is unclear, said the source, but he added that there's been an ongoing battle between the Gangster Disciples and the Black Disciples in the area.

This happened just hours after Chicago Police superintendent spoke about crime reduction in the city.

"While we're struggling in this battle with the gang members generally on the south and west sides, some parts of the northwest, the city is enjoying the lowest crime that it's had in at least 30 years," McCarthy said.

If you ask neighbors who live near the shooting, they disagree.

"It's really sad, really sad. It'll make you scared too, you know? That's why we keep all our doors locked, staying in," Alice Tyler says.

Police said the funeral was not one that they thought needed security for possible gang violence.

The wounded were taken in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where 21-year-old Sherman Miller was pronounced dead, officials said.

Area Central detectives are investigating.
