Prosecutors say a teenager accused of stabbing and killing his stepfather with a samurai-style sword will be charged as an adult. Joseph Addis, 16, was arrested Friday night in Pickens County.
Deputies responded to a home in the 100 block of Fern Creek Court in Jasper around 11:55 p.m. after receiving a 911 call about an argument. They say when they arrived, they found 36-year-old Christopher Allen, who had been stabbed with a sword.
Allen was taken to Kennestone Hospital, but he died in surgery. Pickens County Sheriff Donnie Craig said the teen stabbed Allen with a three and a half foot Samurai-style collector's sword.
Authorities have charged Addis with felony murder. He made his first appearance in court on Monday, and a judge ordered a psychiatric evaluation. He is currently being held in the Juvenile Detention Center in Dalton.
According to an incident report, the boy's mother told police that Allen had been drinking and actually took a swing at her son. The report says the mother broke up the altercation and Allen left the home, but later returned. That's when the stabbing happened.
The boy's mother declined to comment on Monday.
Robert Allen, the victim's brother, told FOX 5 things weren't always perfect between the two, but he never thought anything like this would happen. He says he now hopes the boy gets help.
Addis had been a student at Pickens County High School until October, when he withdrew to be homeschooled instead. Principal Eddie McDonald told FOX 5 teachers there still remember him, and during his time at the school he was a quiet student who didn't cause trouble.
