Archaeological site in Cornville vandalized

Posted: Updated:

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office is investigating a vandalism at a Native American archaeological site in Cornville.

Tuesday afternoon, deputies responded to the site at Sugarloaf and Loy Roads. They were told that someone trespassed onto the site and damaged some of the dig area.

The area is fenced in and marked with a "No Trespassing" sign, despite there being an open trail into the site.

The State Parks site steward found two fresh holes along with a dirt strainer, digging tools and a bucket. There was also damage to two archaeological pots.

The steward believes some historical items were taken.

Authorities believe the crime occurred between Nov. 13 and 20th. No one has reported any unusual activity.

TIPLINE: YCSO at 928-771-3260, case number 12-038430.
