You just can't beat our weather this time of the year. Perfect temperatures and what better way to enjoy them than to get outside.
But firefighters have a warning -- if you plan on hiking, you need to be careful.
Over the weekend, several rescue calls went out on valley trails.
On Piestewa Peak, crews helped a hiker down the mountain, but the pressure on his ankle increased and they had to finish by using the "big wheel."
The hiker looked to be in his late teens or early 20s and suffered a severely twisted right ankle.
Over in Scottsdale, another hiker was rescued. Fire department crews responded to a 911 call from the 62-year-old male hiker.
He may have had a stroke after falling on the mountain. He was transported to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn.
Hiking may look simple enough, but there are many hidden dangers. So how can you stay safe on the trails?
- Hike with a buddy
- Tell someone where you're headed and what time you'll be returning
- Dress appropriately
- Stay on the designated trail
- Bring plenty of water; about a pint per hour per person
- Sunscreen -- SPF 15 as a minimum
