Former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords made a rare public appearance in the valley Tuesday.
She was here to accept an award honoring her husband Mark Kelly and herself. They are recipients of the 2012 Shirley Agnos Legacy Award.
We don't see her out in public all that often, especially here in the valley rather than Tucson.
Giffords was at the Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale to receive an award from a group called the Arizona Town Hall.
She and her husband Mark Kelly were both honored for their work as civic leaders.
Giffords looked great, a huge smile on her face almost the whole time, and people just flocked to her. She even took the mike for a short time.
"Thank you for this award. I appreciate it very much," she said.
"She has always worked for a vision larger than herself. Larger than her party. Larger than her constituency. She has always cared for the country and worked for a better America," said Carolyn Lukensmeyer, Institute on Civil Discourse.
Giffords is still working through the injuries she suffered in Tucson almost two years ago, but still made the effort to hug and speak with dozens at the event today.
She was always flashing that great smile of hers.
