Someone steals pool fence from rental property, renter out of luck

PHOENIX -

A grandmother who got ready to move into a rental home, looking for a better life for her grandkids, has found the backyard is too dangerous for the children.

The big kidney shape pool in the backyard was a big draw for Laura Walker.

"We love the house."

When she rented the house, there was a fence around the backyard pool, but now most of it is gone.

"The landlord called and said that our pool fence was stolen," she says.

The mesh and metal fence cost $2,000 to $3,000. The landlord didn't have the money to replace it, and Laura can't afford to either.

"It folds up too, you can fold it up and take it with you."

Laura thinks someone just walked off with it before she moved in -- and she's not happy about it. She can't move out, but she cannot afford to buy one.

She thought she could work around it, but with so many stories on child drownings here in the valley, Laura worries that may not be enough.

"At this point I don't want anyone in the backyard."

The kids may be playing outside, but it will be in front of the house.

Laura does have some rights as a renter and is hoping to find a fence she and her landlord can afford.
