Superstorm Sandy

Extensive damage to beaches, parks on Long Island

Superstorm Sandy badly pounded Robert Moses State Park, at the western end of Fire Island. In some areas, the boardwalk is gone; only pilings remain.

The erosion at Fields 4 and 5 is so bad you might not be able to go there next summer. The state parks department is concerned that they are in jeopardy of reopening.

In the meantime, at Jones Beach the sand is still piled up on the boardwalk and crews have been shoveling it out of shops. The flooding also caused sections to severely buckle.

Most of the theater at Jones Beach was also under water. Parts of the plumbing and electrical systems were destroyed and there are mountains of debris. Live Nation, which runs the theater, is working with its insurance provider to pay for repairs.

However, the parks department said all of Jones Beach, including the theater, should be up and running by Memorial Day weekend.

Interestingly, Jones Beach didn't suffer much erosion because the sand from Robert Moses and the rest of Fire Island got swept onto Jones Beach.

Robert Moses should be ready by Memorial Day, too, except for Fields 4 and 5.

Many other state and local parks on Long Island suffered severe damage.
