$79 For A Tylenol?! Why The E.R. Costs So Much

Have you ever had to go to an emergency room then felt sick again when you saw the bill? You wouldn't be alone.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports the average cost for an emergency room visit nationwide is about $1300 versus $200 for a visit to a doctor's office.

And that's just the national average. Here in California an e.r. visit can set you back thousands.
Tom Deegan spent 17 years as a nurse in emergency rooms around the country. He's detailed his experiences in his book "Health Care: A View from the Trenches." He stopped by Studio 11 LA with some tips on how to save money.
