A family-owned farm is growing its operations in the valley. Thursday, Hickman Farms showed off its newest facility that produces millions of eggs.
Hickman's Family Farms unveiled its new state-of-the-art feed mill in the southwest valley. The facility, at Salome Highway and Ward Road in Buckeye, was dedicated Thursday.
Governor Jan Brewer touted the expansion of the family-owned and operated company.
"I have a carton of Hickman eggs in my refrigerator right now and thanks to their automated process, no human hands has touched my eggs until I've touched them at the supermarket right?" said Brewer.
Bill and Gertie Hickman started the business in 1944. Governor Brewer says the farm has 5.5 million hens. They consume a million pounds of feed, and lay nearly 4-million eggs a day.
"We're proud to say that we're farmers, that we're factory food farmers and that we think we do it right and that we sell a good product that is safe and nutritious for everybody," says Glenn Hickman.
The farms sell fresh, locally-produced eggs directly to consumers in Arizona as well as neighboring states -- even Hawaii.
"That is just amazing when you think that that many eggs are coming daily. Lots of people are eating them. They're good they're healthy so I get my share," said Brewer.
