2 L.I. hikers rescued from upstate N.Y. mountain

SHANDAKEN, N.Y. (AP) - State police say two people from Long Island have been rescued after spending a night stranded in the Catskill Mountains while hiking.

Troopers say they received a 911 call shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday reporting two hikers stranded on Slide Mountain in the Ulster County town of Shandaken, 50 miles southwest of Albany.

A trooper and two state forest rangers hiked to the mountain and located Michael Leleszi and Erin McKinstry of Huntington. Police say the two had spent the night with clothes and shelter provided by other hikers they had encountered.

Police say Leleszi and McKinstry were suffering from exposure. The search team provided them with food, dry clothes and warmth before escorting them down the mountain.

Both were checked out by an emergency crew and didn't require additional medical treatment.
