Pastors unite to get foster kids adopted

Posted: Updated:

This Bible verse speaks of children and inspired a Colorado pastor to start a campaign that has changed the lives of hundreds of families.

Monday, that pastor brought his Project 127 to Arizona. He hopes to help foster children here as well.

James 1:27 inspired the pastor who created Project 127. It reads: "Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world."

That pastor rallied churches and helped empty Colorado's foster care system of the more than 800 children who were waiting for homes.

The numbers speak for themselves -- 875 children were waiting in Colorado's Foster care system in 2007. Today there are no children waiting. Zero.

All have been placed in homes, thanks to an idea from this Pastor Robert Gelinas of Denver.

His message: "That it is possible for people of faith to step up and to open their lives and their hearts and that a foster care system can be emptied."

Pastor Robert Gelinas is bringing his Project 127 to Phoenix to share with pastors from churches across the valley and state.

"No one person can do it. We can take one child. My wife and I dove into the process. Personally we have six children, five adopted. one at a time. We have room for one more. God will figure the rest out," says Pastor Gelinas.

"If we have enough people willing to step up we can solve this issue and this society across the board will be better for it," says Pastor Terry Crist of City of Grace Church in Arizona.

Pastor Crist says 350 children are waiting in foster care in Arizona.

"Some are in temporary homes today with loving families, others are in group homes, others are in shelters. We have a number of children in state in temporary shelters."

It's the kind of limbo that can permanently damage a child.

"To me, the more the community says yup we get it, there are kids sitting in foster care, no kid should grow up in foster care, no child should age out in foster care," says Kris Jacober of the Arizona Association for Foster and Adoptive Parents.

City of Grace Church in Scottsdale, Mission Community Church, and Redemption Church all had Pastor Gelinas speak about Project 127. They all say it's doable.
