Study: For heart health, food is medicine too

You have one heart attack and then take medication to prevent another one, but there's new research that says what you eat is a very powerful tool in preventing another heart attack.

It's another reason to rush to the store and stock up on your fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains. Canadian researchers looked at more than 30,000 people from dozens of countries, average age 66. Everyone had either cardiovascular disease or diabetes.

But those who had the healthiest diets were able to cut their risk of dying by 35 percent. The healthy eaters also cut their risk of heart attack and stroke. Those with the healthiest diets were also more active, less likely to smoke, and slightly older. Experts say older patients tend to try harder to protect their hearts.

The study in the Journal Circulation does not negate the benefit of medication, but does point out food is medicine too.
