Governor urges quick approval of driver's licenses bill

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Associated Press) -

Gov. Pat Quinn says he supports a plan to allow illegal immigrants in Illinois to get driver's licenses and is urging lawmakers to pass it quickly.

The Illinois Senate approved the measure Tuesday. It now heads to the House.

A spokesman for House Speaker Mike Madigan says a vote on the measure isn't likely until January because it'll first go to a House committee. The veto session ends Wednesday.

Lawmakers return to Springfield in January.

The legislation would let illegal immigrants get licenses and buy insurance without facing deportation. The licenses couldn't be used for other purposes like boarding a plane or voter identification.

An estimated 250,000 illegal immigrants in Illinois drive. Proponents of the measure say it enhances safety and saves money. There was little opposition.
