The effects of 'relaxation' or anti-energy drinks

PHOENIX -

Students at a New Jersey school claim they got sick from a drink they bought on campus called "Marley's Mellow Mood."

It's known as an "anti-energy" drink, designed to help you relax.

We found the drinks at a local convenience store. It's got a picture of Bob Marley on the wrapper and claims to deliver all natural relaxation.

We asked a local doctor about the ingredients in some of the drinks, which, according to the website, include chamomile and valerian root.

"Chamomile is reported at high doses to have some relaxation effects," said Dr. Frank Lovecchio of Maricopa Medical Center.

"Valerian root in high doses can cause somnolence or lots of sleepiness. If you took enough of real valerian root you'd be very sleepy."

Those junior high school students in New Jersey who claim to have gotten sick had the drink at school -- even though it wasn't supposed to be sold on campus. Parents there are upset.

We asked some local students what they thought about the controversy.

"Who doesn't like to take stress away and just relax?" said one student.

"If you are relaxed then you work better and you focus," said another.

On the drinks we found, the label contains a warning that it may cause drowsiness and is best enjoyed when ready to relax.

Like many herbal supplements, the claims typically are not evaluated by the government.

"The important thing for the consumer though I think is realize that a lot of these supplements are not regulated."

On the company's website there is also a warning that these drinks are not for children.

The company says it's taking the situation at that New Jersey school seriously.
