Burglars steal Phoenix mom's computer, Christmas presents

Posted: Updated:

She's a single mother who works hard to provide for her kids. And all that hard work was helping to put presents under the tree for Christmas.

But someone tried to steal her Christmas spirit - by breaking into her home and making off with those presents.

Sharlene Despain says she was at her uncle's house late Tuesday night waiting for a relative whose plane was delayed.

When she got home early Wednesday morning, she found her house ransacked. Thieves took everything from her bed sheets to her Christmas presents.

"It's the first year I was able to give my kids Christmas."

The single mother of two goes to school full time. She works double shifts on weekends for a non-profit that helps the disabled.

Despain says this was the first year she could afford to buy presents for her children.

"I've been saving up and now it's just all gone."

The Phoenix mom knew something was wrong as soon as she stepped into her house Wednesday.

"I turned the light on, I saw everything thrown. My TV was gone, I ran the kids back to the car and called the cops because I wasn't sure if anyone was still in here," she says. "They just broke a hole right through here."

Despain says the thieves took a memory box she had that held with handprints from her kids when they were babies. And they took her Christmas presents hidden in her closet.

"She's obsessed with little games so I got her a handheld learning game. My son, I've been searching for one of those old school rugs with the streets on them. He loves cars."

Police believe they used Despain's sheets off her bed to carry all the stolen possessions away.

They got her computer for school. They even raided her pantry.

Despain says police got a fingerprint off the window that they hope will lead to a suspect.

As we were leaving, we heard Despain's mother reassuring 5-year-old Emmy that Santa would still come.
