Poll triggers Michelle Obama Senate bid speculation

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The filing deadline to run for her husband's old U.S. Senate seat is still more than three years away. But some savvy Illinois pols say they'd love to see First Lady Michelle Obama run in 2016.

A poll that showed she would win is what triggered the speculation, as our Political Editor Mike Flannery reports.

"She'd be terrific. Absolutely. She's intelligent, well spoken. She'd represent us well," said voter Sheila Rock.

Reflecting the findings of a voter opinion survey this week, many here in Michelle Obama's hometown would support her in a bid for elected office, though not all.

"Well, I think she'd better off in terms of behind the scenes" said voter Roderick Bohannon. "If we start looking in terms of the wife running, the whole issue about Bill Clinton. I think we raise a whole different area about dynasties and stuff."

Earlier this year, a 12-year-old asked the First Lady about a Hillary Clinton-style bid to succeed her husband as America's chief executive.

"Absolutely not. No. Being president is a really hard job. And it's an important job. Once his term is over, we'll go on to do other important things," Obama told the girl.

Still, she hasn't specifically ruled out running for the U.S. Senate. The First Family's Illinois State Senator, Kwame Raoul, rated Mrs. Obama's chances.

"I think if she wanted it, which is the big question, it would be hers for the taking. I think she's the type of figure that's likeable. And I think she's actually grown on the public," Raoul said.

Democratic political consultant Ann Liston said she believes the people of Illinois would welcome Michelle Obama back with open arms.

"For Illinois, we're so proud of both the President and the First Lady, I think Illinois would welcome her back and she'd be great," said Anne Liston," Liston said.
