FDA warns against giving discount injectables as gifts

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. -

It's that time of year when people are buying gifts.  Many of us are taking advantage of holiday sales online and in stores.

Some discount sites are offering some enticing deals, but the FDA is warning people to stay away from one beauty regimen.

Shoppers are buying gifts in the traditional brick and mortar stores and online.  Web sites like Living Social and Groupon offer buyers discounts on products and services, but the FDA doesn't want you opening your pocket book for Botox injections.

The FDA found that some non-approved Botox and filler products have made their way into med spas in the United States.

"Most commonly they will dilute it and affect is less than optimal for what you are paying for."

Long time Scottsdale and Paradise Valley plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Shapiro says these watered down Botox products might not work as well.

"We do a lot of work fixing Botox products," he said.

Shapiro says the non-approved products come from Europe or Canada.  They're offered at discount prices on web sites like Living Social and Groupon.

With all those copy cats out there, it's tough to tell which ones are really okay for your body.  Dr. Shapiro recommends looking for two brands that are approved by the FDA.

"It's very simple, you can ask to see the box," he said.

A key word to look for is "cosmetic."

"Botox cosmetic, the other one is called Dysport."

While these online deals may be tempting, "it's buyers beware," said Shapiro.

Before you go under the needle, make sure your products are FDA approved.

"You have to have it done as often, it ends up being more cost effective for you in the long run," said Shapiro.
